Ranger
Last wiki revision 2023-07-01
Rangers are members of several organizations on Azeroth, Outland, and alternate Draenor, skilled in wilderness survival and exploration. The most famous of them are the various groups of elven rangers: elite archers and scouts that may also work with animals.
Though the title of ranger existed as far back as before the Great Sundering, it was the high elves who introduced them to the larger world. The Farstriders notably fought during the Second War on the side of the Alliance of Lordaeron.
Most high elves renamed themselves blood elves after the Scourge invasion of Quel'Thalas. The surviving rangers retained their ties to the modern Farstriders organization under Ranger-General Halduron Brightwing. They are usually stationed in reclaimed Quel'Thalas, holding a presence in the Eversong Woods, Silvermoon City, and the Ghostlands.
Of those who chose to remain high elves, most of them rejoined the Silver Covenant or various lodges such as Quel'Lithien Lodge and Quel'Danil Lodge.
Several deceased rangers were resurrected in undeath as dark rangers and decided to serve the Forsaken under their progenitor Lady Sylvanas Windrunner.
Gilneas used to have its own Gilnean Rangers corps.
Nathanos Marris was once a ranger lord — the first and only human of its kind — trained in the ways of the elven rangers by Sylvanas Windrunner herself. In the recent years, some human organizations started deploying rangers unrelated to elven training. The Northwatch Expeditionary Force for example, employs Northwatch Rangers. 7 also has rangers in their ranks. So does the Twilight's Hammer cult.
The Thornspeakers in Drustvar are allied to local human rangers.
In undeath, Nathanos now trains other Forsaken rangers. This new generation is being made of Forsaken hunters instead of relying on raised dark rangers.
The Rangari, also called the "Eyes of the Prophet", are a group of draenei scouts and rangers, who silently stalk the farthest corners of alternate Draenor. Several NPCs such as Ranger Arepheon and the Karabor Rangers are also simply designated as rangers.
The Rangari, survivalist scouts, also existed in the past of Outland, and the Sha'tari Skyguard is able to deploy rangers.
Other factions known to deploy rangers are the Shado-Pan, the Ramkahen tribe, the ogres. and the quilboar.
The Zandalari trolls have "spearangers" armed with spears.
There are the Gnomish Elite Aerial Rangers.
Pit lord rangers find fel stalkers and train them.
