Maximillian of Northshire

Last wiki revision 2023-03-05

Maximillian of Northshire, nicknamed Max by his beloved Doloria, is a chivalrous (if deluded) human paladin. He was first encountered at the time of the Cataclysm, near the Golakka Hot Springs in Un'Goro Crater, where he strived to save damsels in distress, fight "dragons" and defeat the mother of all devilsaurs with the help of the adventurers as his squires.

During the war in Draenor, he traveled to the garrisons of Lunarfall and Frostwall, preparing himself for a quest to kill the "dragons" present in Blackrock Spire. At the time of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Maximillian left Un'Goro Crater to fight the Burning Legion on the Broken Isles, he was later recruited as a champion of the Order of the Silver Hand by its Highlord.

Coming all the way from Northshire Abbey, Maximillian came to Un'Goro Crater seeking to eliminate the evils of the land and have an adventure. When arriving to the land, he set up camp and searched for a squire. He was willing to take anyone, even a member of the Horde. After finding a random traveler, the paladin took them under his tutelage and trained them in the ways of the squire. For their first mission, he announced that they were going to kill fifteen malignant "dragons" in the crater, considering that these dragons were not the offspring of Alexstrasza the Dragon Queen, but vicious creatures direly in need of a hero's blade. When their squire tried to convince him that there were no dragons in the crater, he refuted everything and explained that he knew much better what a dragon was, even after Spark Nilminer told him that they were "dinosaurs", which is exactly the same thing in his eyes.

After they finished, Maximillian warned his squire that his "paladin's instinct" told him that there were more than "dragons" in the crater, and that maidens near them needed their help. Although his heart was for Doloria, his chivalric code ordered him to save any damsel in danger. Together they managed to find the three "damsels in distress" in the region, the first being a busy female human on a high cliff, Maximillian tried to save her by throwing her to his squire, but the latter couldn't catch her in time and the paladin blamed them for her death. The second was actually a male blood elf who dropped his crate in the nearby lake, Maximillian returned his crate and mistook him for a woman, before he resumed his journey without giving the elf time to specify that he was a man. The last was a female goblin "attacked" by a "pheonix" at the Screaming Reaches, in reality it was the latter's parrot and she was shocked to see her pet get killed. After they had finished "rescuing" everyone, Maximillian remarked that the damsels were less than gracious, with the exception of the elf by the lake, but that they would have better luck tomorrow with damsels whose thankfulness would be equal to their beauty.

The paladin then explained, in a moment of "seriousness", that they now had a quest of great importance before them, to eliminate the mother of all "dragons" in order to end the threat they are in the crater. But before he could go to battle, Maximillian considered it was necessary to seek the help of the Light, and that he had seen its manifestation as spirits on the shores of Golakka Hot Springs. In reality, they were very angry steam elementals that tried to kill him when he approached them to pray and ask for their help, so the squire had to protect the knight while he performed his prayers. When he was satisfied with their "blessings", although he did not understand why his squire had to destroy them, they returned together to his camp to prepare for their last and dangerous quest.

Once ready, Maximillian and his squire traveled to confront the Devilsaur Queen at the Terror Run, both on the back of Pimento. The knight attempted a heroic charge against the brood mother, but they had no choice but to flee through the crater when the latter, much larger than expected, pursued them to devour them. During the escape, Maximillian panicked and ordered his squire to throw everything they could find to defeat the monster, like stones, and even the very armor of the paladin which managed to kill the dinosaur. At the end of their journey, Maxwell gave his squire a life lesson, he then promoted them from squire to fledgling knight, and gave them one of his remaining equipment before saying their goodbyes.

After replacing his armour, Maximillian journeyed to Mount Hyjal, where helped the adventurers to defend Sethria's Roost against the minions of Ragnaros the Firelord.

During the war in Draenor, Maximillian could be found in Frostwall Tavern and Lunarfall Inn, where he warned the Garrison Commanders that dragons have settled within the hallowed halls of Blackrock Spire, and that they "kidnapped" a distressed damsel, the latter actually being Warlord Zaela who took control of the mountain at the head of the Ironmarch. As their squires, he sent them to find evidence of the dragons' presence, so he wouldn't waste his time and heroism on a dragonless quest. When they returned with evidence, he announced that he would go to the spire to kill no less than twenty of these great beasts in the name of Doloria.

Some time later, he once again met with the commanders, and told them that he had heroically approached the gates of Blackrock Spire with the intention of ending the reign of the dragons within. However, at the last moment, his mind drifted to thoughts of Lady Doloria's fair face and to his own painfully unsatisfied desires, and so his sword arm fell limp at his side. He then decided to send his squires once again to look for evidence that dragons were present at Upper Blackrock Spire, and when they returned with evidence, he announced that this time he would go to kill no less than thirty of these great beasts in the name of Doloria.

At the time of the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Maximillian aided the adventurers in defending southern Tanaris from the demons during the Legion Invasions. He was accompanied by several of Un'Goro's Stone Guardians and Stone Golems, and still deluded as ever, thought everything that happened in the area was the fault of "dragons".

During the Armies of Legionfall's assault on the Broken Shore, Maximillian sent a letter to the Highlord of the Knights of the Silver Hand, in which he announced that he had returned from the depths of Un'Goro Crater, and that his fleet has made landfall on the beaches of the Broken Isles. He invited them to join him at his fortifications, where he mentioned he was getting ready to break through the Burning Legion's lines and to send them back into the Twisting Nether. In reality, Maximillian was actually alone and undressed on a beach on the northern coast of Highmountain, and was surprised that the Highlord was his squire as he did not immediately recognize them. He then proudly announced that he had built his camp after securing the beach from "demons", whose bodies he showed were those of two crabs. Despite an attempt to convince him that they were not demons, he refuted everything and explained that he was far more experienced in the field than anyone.

Before they began their journey together once more, Maximillian asked the Highlord to kneel and made them his squire once again. Afterwards, he explained that his journey to the Broken Isles was perilous, as he met many "demons" that he had to overcome, but it cost him his armor, his sword, and his mount. Consequently, he sent his squire to retrieve all of his equipment, promising to promote them to the rank of "Squire, First Class". The armor of Maximillian was found in several sacks in the coastal waters, and the paladin explained that he had removed it in order to avoid sinking if his ship had had an accident at sea. His sword Excaliberto and his mount Pimento were found in the possession of the Swamprock murlocs in Shipwreck Cove, according to Maximillian they were stolen from him by these "demons" while he was scouting the coast. When they had accomplished their mission, the knight kept his word and promoted them to the rank of "Squire, First Class".

Once ready for their journey, Maximillian revealed that he was not only here to repel the demonic invasion, but also to seek after his beloved Doloria, for he had a vision that she had been kidnapped and taken to a floating city in the sky. He then ordered his squire to join him in Dalaran, and together they managed to find Doloria in the Legerdemain Lounge. Unexpectedly, Doloria turned out to be a female goblin who was surprised that Maximillian managed to find her so far. She secretly explained to the Highlord that Maximillian had no chance of being with her, but because his heart was in the right place, she couldn't muster the courage to tell him and preferred to run away, hoping that he would gave up on her. However, and to her great regret, he always managed to find her. She then had the idea to send them to kill "Hill Bandits", in reality Hill Ettins at Sylvan Falls in Highmountain, in order to recover jewels so that she could be freed from her kidnappers. The knight accepted this mission, and with his squire they left to defeat their adversary, however, when they returned, they could not find Doloria who had "disappeared", as she had hidden herself behind a mask and changed her name for "Doloris".

Desperate, Maximillian asked the Highlord to help him search for Doloria by asking questions to the customers present in the inn. While the Highlord helped Doloria not to be discovered, Maximillian searched in every corner and even asked Bonegrim a few questions. Still deluded as ever, he failed to find his beloved and accepted that she had been abducted once again, he then told the Highlord that they would not rest until they found her, asked them to join him as a follower to lead his troops, and that they would accomplish the missions he would give them. In reality, it is Maximillian who joined the ranks of the Order of the Silver Hand as a Champion in the service of its Highlord.

A few years later, Maximillian visited the T&W Trading Post in Stormwind City to buy a sword, however, Tawny Seabraid pointed out he was already carrying one. Surprised, he claimed that he had indeed forgotten about it, and when Tawny mentioned that she was joking and that they had many swords for sale, he told her that he already had a sword and resumed his journey, leaving the dwarf in disbelief.

  • His generic name in is Shieldbearer.
  • Maximillian and his acts are a clear reference to the tales of heroic knights during Medieval Europe. However, with one of the quest rewards being a toy windmill, he is more so a homage towards the famous novel of Don Quixote. This is additionally supported by his frequent mentions of Doloria, whose name is very similar to Don Quixote's Dulcinea.

His title may suggest that he is a member of the Brotherhood of Northshire (or at least he thinks he is).
