Winterax tribe

Last wiki revision 2022-07-28

The Winterax tribe are a tribe (or clan) of ice trolls led by Korrak the Bloodrager. They are cannibals. The Winterax do not share the unusually large size of their Drakkari brethren.

The Winterax were once part of the Drakkari Empire. After the Sundering, the Drakkari tribe continued to live in what had become the bitterly cold continent of Northrend. The Winterax and Frostmane tribes, however, later settled in the Eastern Kingdoms. Due to the ice trolls' unrelenting hostility toward outsiders, historians have yet to learn how these two tribes were separated from the Drakkari and came to live so far from the ancient site of Zul'Drak.

The Winterax trolls have been invading the valleys of Alterac and Alterac Valley and have been fighting the dwarves of the Stormpike clan (Stormpike Guard) and Frostwolf clan. During their battles in Alterac Valley, Korrak was slain and resurrected by his people multiple times.

One day, Korrak and his people simply disappeared, along with most of their belongings and supplies. The mystified orcs and dwarves concluded that the trolls had at last given up their home, which, after all, had devolved into little more than a bloody battlefield, and left in search of greener pastures. It was said that Korrak's death would have brought the death of the Winterax.

They eventually left Alterac Valley and traveled across sea to Zul'Drak. Some of the Winterax trolls were among the Quetz'lun Worshippers who tried to sacrifice their god, Quetz'lun, for power. Quetz'lun took her revenge on her traitorous worshipers; however, condemning them to suffer an eternity of suffering and death within a pocket dimension of her own making.

Korrak the Bloodranger, meanwhile, was empowered by the loa and sent to battle in the Amphitheater of Anguish by the Drakkari, who considered this to be a 'power move. Many of the Winterax were among the Amphitheater Spectators watching as their chieftain fought within the ring. In battle, Korrak declared the Ampitheater belonged to the Winterax. He was ultimately slain in the arena, though it is unknown if his death was permanent as the Winterax have resurrected Korrak numerous times in the past.

Winterax Speakers can be found in Zuldazar on Zandalar. Unlike their parent tribe, the Drakkari, the Winterax remain outside of the House of the Fallen Tribes, meaning that the tribe has survived, despite Korrak's defeat and the fall of Zul'Drak. It is unknown where the tribe lives now; as they were last seen in Zul'Drak. Whether they have somehow managed to make a home for themselves in Northrend or if the tribe as a whole has found refuge in Zandalar is unknown. As with most tribes, they are displeased with the idea of the Zandalari joining the Horde.

Despite this, many Winterax make up the procession for Rastakhan, mourning his death. They are neutral to the Horde, only fighting back if attacked first.

  • The Winterax appear to worship the same loa as the Drakkari, as Korrak the Bloodrager was empowered by them before his defeat in the arena, though he was sent by the Drakkari. The Quetz'lun Worshippers also appear to be from the tribe, sharing the same model as the Winterax Trolls and Winterax Speakers.
  • The tribe's appearance differs significantly from other ice troll tribes. They are, outside of their dire trolls, smaller than other ice trolls, using the same model as the jungle trolls. They also do not have blue skin, instead, favoring a pale gray / white skin tone with red or orange eyes for both men and women.
  • The World of Warcraft 15th-anniversary event, Korrak's Revenge, is named for the leader of the tribe. This marked their return to Alterac Valley, in this one instance, fully within their old home alongside all other removed aspects from Alterac Valley.
  • While there is not a lot to go by, ice trolls of the Winterax tribe may be a subspecies of their own stemming from ice trolls; due to the fact that they're smaller on average than the ice trolls of other tribes as well as having a different skin color. Why this is, has not been confirmed.
  • It is unknown if Korrak survived the Amphitheater of Anguish. While he is slain in the arena, Korrak was noted for being repeatedly resurrected during his battles in Alterac Valley, to the point of earning the moniker 'The Everliving'. As a result, the Winterax may have simply resurrected him after he was killed. In addition, the Horde and Alliance noted that his defeat would be the end for his tribe. While this may have been a result of their placement in Alterac; the Winterax ultimately outlived the Drakkari.
