The Lava Spawn is summoned by the Firelord.
Upon the Lava Spawn's 15th attack, it will replicate, splitting itself into two Lava Spawns. This process takes 5 seconds. After a successful split, 12 seconds are added to the remaining timed life of the units.
A Lava Spawn can split multiple times, potentially resulting in a sizable force of them.
