Frost wyrm
Last wiki revision 2023-09-10
- Some of Azeroth's mightiest dragons have been summoned across the veil between life and death to serve new masters with undying loyalty.
Frost wyrms, also spelled as frostwyrms, are the skeletal remains of adult blue dragons killed by the Scourge. These reanimated vessels of destruction do not fear death; they dispense it.
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Knights of the Ebon Blade killed storm drakes in order to raise them as frost wyrms, including the powerful Daumyr. These wyrms were then used against the Burning Legion at the Broken Shore. The powerful red dragon Kyranastrasz was also found and raised by the Ebon Blade.
During the Fourth War, another death knight called Danir Emberlight tried resurrecting a green dragon, Vadekius.
In ages past, venerable dragons nearing death flew to the land of Northrend to die. To this day there are entire dragon graveyards littered with massive petrified bones and skulls. When Ner'zhul, the Lich King, took control of Northrend, he used his powerful magics to raise the ancient dragon skeletons from the dead. These skeletal dragons radiate cold power and think of nothing other than serving their dark master.
Frost wyrms have a cold-based breath weapon that can shatter entire buildings and enemies both on the ground and in the air. They are also quite fond of devouring their hapless enemies whole. Ner'zhul's vicious frost wyrms hold the frosts of Northrend within their skeletal hearts. By inhaling a great deal of air, frost wyrms can expel blasts of freezing cold so extreme, that they pull all the moisture from the air around a building and freezes it solid. The boneyard is the home of the frost wyrms. They have a crippling ability to cast their freezing breath onto enemy forces and buildings. In large numbers, frost wyrms present a truly dominating force.
Necromancy and esoteric binding rituals combine to bend them to their riders' will. The most relentless of all frost wyrms are the Frostbrood vanquishers, which are raised from the depths of Icecrown. When it is determined that a frost wyrm died a particularly gruesome death, it is dubbed a "Bloodbathed Vanquisher". Many believe that some frost wyrms were forced to fight their own kind for others' amusement during their early lives, giving them a particularly combative temperament in undeath.
In the Alterac Mountains, there was at least one frost wyrm raised by the ghoul Ichor with the Orb of Ner'zhul.
After the Lich King awoke from his long dormancy, he journeyed to Sindragosa's Fall where he raised the ancient dragon Sindragosa, the first consort to Malygos, as a frost wyrm. His final desecration of Sindragosa was to tear the spirits of her lost whelps into undeath in front of her skeletal form, as a final affront to the great dragon, and then ordered her to lead the Frostbrood into war. The Scourge reanimated a few particularly ancient and powerful proto-dragons to become members of the Frostbrood as well.
Frost wyrms often receive a new name upon being raised into undeath. On occasion, however, they retain the names they had in life.

These creatures have the skeletal forms of great dragons, and wicked intelligence gleams in their eyes. Now, these once-noble beasts serve Ner'zhul and seek to expand the Lich King's rapidly growing empire. They have no memories of their previous lives nor of the world beyond death. They are intelligent beings, quite capable of strategy, tactics, and deception, but they have no understanding of their past dragon heritage. They are withered creatures.
