The Scarlet Key

The Scarlet Key is the master key to the most heavily-guarded areas claimed by the Scarlet Crusade - the Armory and Cathedral wings of the Scarlet Monastery.

The key was also once used to open the Scarlet Bastion in western Stratholme; this requirement was removed during patch 3.2.0.

The new version of the key was added in patch 10.1.7, and is used to unlock access to the original, pre- version of Scarlet Monastery. This version of the key does not bind, and as such can be sold on Auction House.

While in possession of the key, head to the Grand Vestibule of the Scarlet Monastery exterior to spot an Old Keyring at or in Tirisfal Glades coordinates. It starts The Scarlet Key (quest), which unlocks the original instances.

In (and after unlocking the original wings in retail), this item drops from the static chest (Doan's Strongbox) behind the final boss, Arcanist Doan, in the Library wing of the Scarlet Monastery in Tirisfal Glades. The chest is lootable by everyone, and the key is automatically placed in the keyring. In retail, the key can be obtained once per week per account.

In retail, the key is also common drop from the Loot-Filled Pumpkin container, the once-a-day award for completing the Headless Horseman encounter for 60+ characters during Hallow's End.

Obtaining this key is a criterion for The Keymaster on Classic realms.
