World of Warcraft endgame and patch storylines
Last wiki revision 2023-10-08
This is a list of World of Warcraft endgame and patch storylines. This only covers the original World of Warcraft (and, by extension World of Warcraft: Classic).
Reputation grind was a major part of World of Warcraft endgame. The player can grind reputation with capital cities of their faction, with the reward of being able to purchase their Mounts upon reaching. Apart from one-time quests, there is a certain quest line, ending with a repeatable quest, that serves primarily to gain reputation.
- Capital cities
- 1) A Donation of Wool
- 2) A Donation of Silk
- 3) A Donation of Mageweave
- 4) A Donation of Runecloth
- 5) Additional Runecloth - repeatable
While not very important in the long run, having these furbolgs at least not would allow one to get through their tunnel between Felwood, Winterspring, and Moonglade unmolested.
- Timbermaw Hold
The player can get reputation by killing corrupted furbolg in Felwood and Winterspring, and doing quests for them. Here are the initial quests.
- 1) Timbermaw Ally - Mandatory for any further quests
- 2) *Unlocks repeatable Timbermaw Ally (repeatable), Feathers for Grazle
- 3) Speak to Nafien (optional)
- 4) Deadwood of the North
- 5) *Unlocks repeatable Feathers for Nafien
- 6) Speak to Salfa (Classic) (optional)
- 7) Winterfall Activity (Classic)
- 8) *Unlocks repeatable Winterfall Activity (repeatable), Beads for Salfa
After reaching the player can get more quests:
- Winterfall Ritual Totem (quest)
- Deadwood Ritual Totem (quest)
- Runecloth (quest)
- Sacred Cloth - Tailors only
A reward for reaching is these quests:
- 1) The Root of All Evil
- 2) The Brokering of Peace
One of the initial endgame reputations, primarily concerned with fighting against undead. Apart from one-time quests, the player can gain reputation with them in the following ways:
- Argent Dawn
- 1) Killing undead in the Western and Eastern Plaguelands. Regular undead gives reputation until 3000/6000, elite until 11999/12000
- 2) Killing undead bosses in Scholomance and Stratholme.
- 3) Doing repeatable quests:
- 4) *Minion's Scourgestones
- 5) *Invader's Scourgestones (Classic)
- 6) *Corruptor's Scourgestones (Classic)
- 7) *Felstone Field Cauldron
- 8) *Dalson's Tears Cauldron
- 9) *Writhing Haunt Cauldron
- 10) *Gahrron's Withering Cauldron (Classic)
- 11) *Healthy Dragon Scale (quest)
Having at least with Argent Dawn is important, as it is mandatory to eventually enter Naxxramas.
A very important reputation for early raiding, as having with them is necessary to be able to fight the last two bosses of Molten Core. The player can gain reputation by killing elementals in Silithus, (until ), Blackrock Depths, Upper Blackrock Spire and, of course, Molten Core itself (until ). Once at Revered, the only way to get further reputation is by killing bosses in Molten Core.
- Hydraxian Waterlords
The first notable storylines are dungeon keys and attunements. There are not that many dungeons that require attunements, but there are some. The player needs to obtain the Shadowforge Key in order to progress past a certain point of Blackrock Depths. It is obtained through a pair of quests in the Blackrock Mountain.
- Blackrock Depths
- 1) Dark Iron Legacy
- 2) Dark Iron Legacy
The gate to scholomance is initially locked, and requires a Skeleton Key to open. To obtain it, the player needs to do a certain quest chain in the Western Plaguelands.
- Scholomance
To progress past a certain point in the "living" part of Stratholme, the player needs to retrieve The Scarlet Key from Scarlet Monastery Library.
- Stratholme
In addition, once the player gets the Key to the City from Magistrate Barthilas, they can enter the dungeon through the side entrance.
One does not simply walk into raid instance of World of Warcraft. First, they must prove themself worthy.
To gain access to Upper Blackrock Spire, the player needs to complete a pair of quests in Lower Blackrock Spire.
- Upper Blackrock Spire
- 1) Seal of Ascension (quest)
- 2) Seal of Ascension (2)
While a player can walk into Molten Core with no preparation, they cannot access the last two bosses of the instance without the help of Hydraxian Waterlords. But it takes work before the water elementals will provide said help.
- Molten Core
For a time, Onyxia's Lair was the peak of raiding. It does require a lot of effort before the player is allowed entrance, with Upper Blackrock Spire unlock being mandatory.
- Onyxia's Lair
- Alliance
- Horde
The major addition is the addition of a new dungeon in Desolace. While not end-game level, it is reasonably high level, with some of the items there being almost Best in Slot. The quests associated with Maraudon are:

- Corruption of Earth and Seed (quest)
- The Pariah's Instructions (quest)
- Legends of Maraudon
- Leads to:The Scepter of Celebras (quest) - serves as a shortcut attunement

- Feathermoon Stronghold (quest) / Camp Mojache (quest) (breadcrumb)
- Lethtendris's Web
- Pusillin and the Elder Azj'Tordin - serves as an attunement for two of three wings of the dungeon due to Pusillin dropping Crescent Key.
- Free Knot! (repeatable)
- The Madness Within (Classic)
- The Treasure of the Shen'dralar (Classic)
- Shards of the Felvine (Classic)
- Arcane Refreshment
In addition, it is possible to run through one of the wings without killing any bosses but the final - a so-called tribute run. The quests associated with the tribute run are:
- The Gordok Ogre Suit (Classic)
- The Gordok Ogre Suit (repeatable)
- The Gordok Taste Test
- Unfinished Gordok Business
Part of dealing with the Dire Maul is dealing with Shen'dralar. By doing quests for them, the player can obtain powerful enchantments, class-specific trinkets, and one of the most powerful tank swords at the time.

Another addition of the patch are the world bosses:
- , appears in Azshara.
- , appears in the Blasted Lands.
While there are no quests associated with fighting and defeating them (at the time, at least), they provide some very powerful rewards.
With the addition of dungeon player caps, the previous entrance to Molten Core in Blackrock Depths has become impractical. As such, a quest has been added to bypass it.
- Attunement to the Core
The main addition of this patch is the Honor system, which promotes Player versus Player combat. In addition, there are several class-specific questlines, and more...
Most of the PvP was not connected to quests. The one that was is Gurubashi Arena Treasure Chest - opening it once awarded the Arena Master and opened a quest to obtain eleven more to get Arena Grand Master.

Warlocks get three different quest chains. The first chain awards the spell Inferno, which summons a subjugatable Infernal.
- Inferno

The second chain awards the spell Ritual of Doom - a 5-man spell that sacrifices one of the participants to summon a subjugatable Doomguard.

The third quest chain awards the class-specific mount - the Dreadsteed.

The storylines added in this patch mostly have to deal with eponymous battlegrounds.

Another thing added in the patch was updated to some of the zones. Thorium Point was added to previously lacking in quests Searing Gorge, while Revantusk Village was added to the Hinterlands as counterpart to Aerie Peak. In addition, while no new settlements were added to Feralas, there are many new quests.
The big addition of this patch is the addition of another raid instance, Blackwing Lair. Before the player can access it, they need to attune to it. Thankfully, the attunement is short and only needs a single Upper Blackrock Spire run.

The first and main major addition of the patch is Zul'Gurub - a raid instance that is in-between Tier 1 raids and Blackwing Lair, located in Stranglethorn Vale. The entrance to Zul'Gurub is not blocked by attunement, but a certain questline serves as a background and a breadcrumb for it:
The quests that take place in actual raid instance are:

- Nat's Measuring Tape (quest)
- The Heart of Hakkar
In addition, there is a large number of turn-in quests that can be used to obtain Zandalar Tribe set armor, trinkets and neck pieces, as well as enchantments. For that, see Zandalar Tribe set and Zul'Gurub enchantment.

The first part of the unlocking process - the ability to turn in resources in return for a number of Alliance Commendation Signet / Horde Commendation Signet and Ahn'Qiraj War Effort Supplies. The war effort needed tens or even hundreds of thousand of supplies to succeed, so every character could contribute regardless of their level - even low-level characters could bring a batch of Copper Bar, for example, and receive rewards. The second part of unlocking the raids involved a long and arduous questline, involving multiple forays into previous raids, several world boss fights and a lot of grinding.
- The Scepter of the Shifting Sands
One of the "under-the-hood" patches - it did not add much in terms of major content, instead focusing on quality of life changes.
The major storyline added in this patch is a long quest chain focusing on the mercenary guild Veiled Blade and their ill-fated expedition into Upper Blackrock Spire. The main reason to do this quest chain is to upgrade the player's Dungeon Set 1 equipment into Dungeon Set 2.
The main addition of this patch is Naxxramas - the eponymous necropolis, which serves as a final raid instance of original World of Warcraft, and the entrance to which is located in the Eastern Plaguelands. It was prefixed by the world event Scourge Invasion.
Attuning to the raid instance requires reputation with Argent Dawn - at least is necessary to attune at all, while having higher levels reduces attunement costs.
The quests associated with Naxxramas are:
- The Dread Citadel - Naxxramas (attunement)
- Echoes of War
- The Fate of Ramaladni
- Omarion's Handbook (quest)
- The Fall of Kel'Thuzad
Another addition, tied with Naxxramas, is Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian - a legendary staff for caster classes, Atiesh serves as a culmination of power for those classes.
- 1) Obtain 40 Splinter of Atiesh by defeating bosses in Naxxramas, then assemble them into Frame of Atiesh.
- 2) Frame of Atiesh (quest) - go to Caverns of Time and speak with Anachronos. One needs to be at least with Brood of Nozdormu for Anachronos to pay them any attention.
- 3) Atiesh, the Befouled Greatstaff - Kill C'Thun for Base of Atiesh and Kel'Thuzad for Staff Head of Atiesh.
- 4) Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian (quest) - Head to Stratholme, where you have to cleanse the staff by fighting the demon within. Sword-using classes can disarm the demon to briefly wield one of its swords, Andonisus, Reaper of Souls. Staff get!
The final major patch of original World of Warcraft is focused primarily on PvP. Its major additions are Cross-Realm Battlegrounds, the first instance of cross-realm play in the game, and pair of max-level World PvP events.
The first World PvP event involves capturing towers in the Eastern Plaguelands for various bonuses that work in the Eastern Plaguelands, Stratholme and Naxxramas. There is one quest on each side, dealing with this event:
- Establishing New Outposts / Bolstering Our Defenses
The second World PvP event involves scouring Silithus for geysers of Silithyst, and delivering said substance to their faction camp. The first faction to collect 200 Silithyst wins and gains a buff that increases Cenarion Circle reputation gains by 25%, and lasts until the other faction collects their 200. The quests involved in the event are:
- 1) Report to Marshal Bluewall / Report to General Kirika
- 2) Scouring the Desert (quest)
