WoW: Forever Cuts Forced World Refreshes: Layering Changes at Launch
Joining a group in WoW: Forever will no longer instantly move you to another layer. Blizzard explains the layering changes coming at launch and what's still being tuned.
TL;DR: At launch, joining a group in WoW: Forever won't instantly move you to a new layer. You'll get a pop-up and a time window instead. Blizzard says forced world refreshes will be much rarer than in the Beta, but zone-to-zone layering stays for now.
What Blizzard said
On episode 6 of the official WoW: Forever podcast, Principal Software Engineer Frank Williams said the Beta's layering algorithms were "overaggressive" about grouping players with their community, so players got moved too often. After about two weeks of tuning, the system calmed down. Wowhead's recap quotes him:
"When you join a group, it's actually going to just do that pop-up; it's not going to just move you."
What changes at launch
- No instant move on group join. You choose when to switch, within a time limit. Williams cited Hardcore (coming after launch) as a reason: no surprise elite next to you.
- Fewer refreshes overall. The pop-up appears "in a more limited capacity."
- Zone layering stays. Players can still vanish when you cross a zone border. Blizzard can tune which zones share layers, so launch (busy Durotar, quiet Orgrimmar) may look different a month later, per Wowhead.
- Big world PvP: as in the Beta. Auto-expanding servers for large battles are an idea, not a launch feature. Williams: the end-of-Beta state "is what you can expect for launch."
News recap. Everloot has no addon data on layering.
